How does load rating affect towing hook strength?

Load rating shows how much pulling force a towing hook can safely handle. It is one of the most important indicators of actual towing performance. 

But before we discuss load rating, it’s important to learn first about what working load limit and breaking strength mean:

  • Working load limit: the safe load the hook can handle during towing. 
  • Breaking strength: the maximum load before failure.

Basic explanation

Towing creates sudden spikes in load caused by vehicle movement, jerking, uneven ground, or stuck recovery situations (higher than the actual vehicle weight).

For example, a towing hook with a 16,000 lb breaking strength may only be rated for a 5,000 lb working load.

AISI 1045 carbon steel (per ASTM A108) is often used for towing parts because it offers good tensile strength and toughness. 

Its tensile strength can reach around 570 MPa or higher, depending on treatment.

Lower-grade steel may cost less but has reduced strength. That’s because under a heavy pulling force, it is more likely to deform.
